Have you ever dreamed of breaking free from gravity, even for a moment, and feeling complete freedom beneath the surface? Mermaiding is much more than an eye-catching social media trend. It’s a fast-growing discipline that combines elegance, sport and close contact with the water.
If the underwater world fascinates you but you don’t know where to start – this guide is for you!
Magic meets sport
Although silicone mermaid tails dazzle with their details, colours and stunning looks, mermaiding is above all a physical activity. Swimming in a tail with a built-in monofin works your whole body – from the deep core muscles to your legs and arms.
It also teaches calm. Moving underwater in a tail feels like an intense pool workout, where controlling your body, relaxing and managing your breath become key. Over time, gliding smoothly on a held breath becomes natural, and you can focus entirely on the beauty of moving underwater.
Gear – what do you need for mermaiding?
To start your adventure safely and comfortably, you need the right equipment:
- Monofin: The “engine” of every mermaid. Usually made of plastic, fibreglass or carbon fibre and covered with neoprene. It forces a specific, wave-like body movement (the so-called dolphin kick).
- Tail: It can be made of fabric (ideal for starting out and learning) or of top-quality silicone. Silicone tails are true works of art – made to measure, they hug the body perfectly and behave incredibly realistically in the water.
- Mask or goggles: Essential for finding your way comfortably underwater.
Why sign up for a course?
Even if you’re a great swimmer, mermaiding requires a specific technique. Jumping into the water with a monofin without proper preparation can be dangerous. A professional mermaiding course is an investment in safety and confidence.
What will you learn in class?
- How to put on and take off the tail in the water correctly (safety procedures).
- Monofin swimming technique – how to save energy and generate maximum propulsion.
- The basics of equalising pressure and holding your breath safely.
- How to perform spectacular underwater figures and turns.
Dive into a new passion
Mermaiding is a fantastic way to build fitness, push your own limits and – just as importantly – create beautiful memories (and amazing photos!). Whether you plan to swim for fun at your local pool or dream of professional underwater photo shoots, the first step is professional training and choosing the right gear.
